MARJUT

Hi there! I’m Marjut Tuulia Numminen, the founder of the WORLD OF MARJATTA. I am a Finnish woman rooted in the wisdom traditions of the Northern ancestral songlines and Baltic-Finnic cultural heritage. I am an artist and ceremonialist, and a sensitive wild woman at heart. My greatest wish is to create harmony, peace, joy, and happiness on this beloved Mother Planet of ours.

I work mainly with watercolours and gouache, blown and lampworked glass and photography.

I worked as a glassblower artist at Soda Shop Design from 2011 to 2022, after which I have worked as a freelance artist. Glass captured my heart already at a young age, and I have made a 15-year career in glass art. A material glowing magically at over a thousand degrees and freely shapeable has been an incredible companion: intense and alchemical. While creating the Goddess of Dawn sculptures, it felt as if our ancestral mothers wanted to become visible and remembered again. The molten material gave them a way to rise from the memory of stone and earth.

The desire to move towards even more environmentally friendly forms of art has also led me to seek new ways of making art. I spend more and more time in the forest and less time at my desk. It creates quality time in both places. In the forest I hear the Mothers of the North better, myself better. And at my desk I let ideas flow onto paper as art. I have worked for a decade and a half with fire, earth, and air. Now it feels that it is time to work with water. Small-scale, flowing, and effortless. Watercolors and gouache are my new passion. One day, when I sat down at my painting table, women began to appear on my paper. Joyful goddesses with flowers and plants growing from their heads. There insects buzzed and butterflies fluttered. The inner landscapes of creatrixes, I thought. Peace of mind, vitality, beauty, colour. Everything I wished for myself and for the world. And oh, how much joy these women brought me! I had ended up painting myself; I had ended up painting my sisters. Us, the daughters of the ancestral mothers, women of today, from the lineages of ancient ones, each with our own soul songs. Goddesses like you and me. I noticed that the perspective in the Mothers of the North had shifted to how our ancestry live within us, and how we modern women are the mothers of the future.

This journey is only at its beginning, promising countless hours of the joy of painting, richness of colour, and the flow of creativity!
